I've tried this method two years in a row with literally zero success. After four months (around mid-May), I give up, then bury 10 seeds in one tree pot and eventually about 80% sprout. Then I let them sit in the tree pot until they go dormant for winter, at that point, I cut open the tree pot and separate all of them and repot them in individual tree pots. I do not know why I can't get a single seed to sprout with the paper towels, but then they sprout so readily when I bury them.

I wonder if its a temperature thing. Try putting your tray on a seedling heat mat? I have done this and it works, BUT you need to switch out the paper towel because the extra heat causes mold on the paper towel.

So they germinate while still in the fridge? Or you pull them out after 60 days and leave at room temp in the container?

Bob Bors at the University of Saskatchewan deserves a medal for the initial and ongoing development of large, sweet, and hardy Haskap cultivars. I'm in Canada, and this has been a game changer for berry production. Just after a few years after its introduction they're even common to see even the newer Boreal series (Beast/Beauty/Blizzard) at your local grocery store nursery literally everywhere. Even Walmart, Metro, Loblaws, Home Depot, and Canadian Tire. They're so less fussy to grow than blueberries, and deer don't eat the leaves or growing shoots like blueberries in the spring. No radical inputs of sulfur necessary to acidify the soil, these haskaps literally grow in anything here and able to handle a wider range of pH and poor fertility soils. They're also one of the first berries on our little farm in June. Collecting the ripest and biggest fruits into a handful and popping it all into my mouth at once is like a drug to me. My wife is like "leave some for the customers!" Lol

We always just threw a few pounds of heartnuts into the bottom of the vegetable crisper in the fridge from late fall until planting time in the early spring in Nova Scotia. Never had an issue, nearly 100% germination rate.

Enjoyed your video but please may I ask, I live in Southern Michigan, I don't understand why you cannot try rooting them before they go dormant! That way if you were to root them today say June 24, theoretically couldn't they be well rooted here before winter and planted outside!

Thank you for the video and congratulations on your success. I looked for followup after this stage and did not find answers, so am asking some questions now: 1) How long did you keep the individual seedlings in the pots? 2) Did you keep the pots in the shade? 3) When did you transplant the potted seedlings into their permanent outdoor location? 4) Any suggestions for the process of putting them outdoors? 5) Did you put a cage around the outdoor transplants to protect from animals? 6) Did you mulch around the outdoor transplants to temper winter heat and cold waves? Thank you for your experience and suggestions, from Minnesota and a big fan of CBC Radio1 :)

    • @HagonjonesHomestead

Hi Clinton, Thank you for Reaching out ! Let's answer those questions 1) How long did you keep the individual seedlings in the pots? I kept them in pots for a year, but they could have been planted that spring with no issue. 2) Did you keep the pots in the shade? I had them in my greenhouse and then transitioned them into full sun when I was ready to plant them. putting them in full sun for an hour the first few days and adding time over a few weeks until they become accustom to the sunlight 3) When did you transplant the potted seedlings into their permanent outdoor location? I waited a year, but only because I did not have a home for them right away 4) Any suggestions for the process of putting them outdoors? I like to use the natural soil in the area as much as possible, add a small amount of bonemeal and some organic fertilizer 5) Did you put a cage around the outdoor transplants to protect from animals? I did not and was lucky. but lately try to live buy the saying "Plant a fence before you plant a tree/bush" LOL 6) Did you mulch around the outdoor transplants to temper winter heat and cold waves? I used goat bedding from my barn, but a natural mulch would work just as well. This was more for moisture control vs winter temps.

I didn't go into the production you showed, but I just took some stalks and stuck them in the wet ground and most of the leafing parts did not even welt but kept on growing. I don't want to do too much to propagate as I don't have the time. I took the stalks from wild plants already growing on the back of my land. Thanks for the video and the sowing lesson. I'm using a heating mat this year to get them going fast hopefully getting allot more growth in a season my method's similar but I'm using a humidity dome with a strainer and damp cloth this should allow them to breathe a little reducing mold as I will water the seeds periodically. I believe the seeds like to sprout with soil temps at 80-90*F, so I'll set the temp to 85*F.

That time's gone by and was hoping to see how you go through the next step. I jusy collected Paperbark Maple seeds that I put thru the soaking process today, and will lay them in soil for 120 days. But what's next? Best way to get them into a pot, or plastic flats...I'm curious. Thanks for a great video, and ...THUMBS UP!!!

I wonder if a weak water and bleach solution on the towels would hurt them. It would stop mold. I had mold get on pawpaw and chestnut seeds I’ve sprouted in peat moss. I’ve got a bunch of Texas Mountain Laurel and Tupelo seeds in my oven now. The pilot light keeps them at 75 to 80 degrees when I crack the door barely open. I put as many pots as I can fit in there.
